CALL OUT ///

BOYSBOYSBOYS IS A NEW DOCUMENTARY-STYLE CONTEMPORARY PERFORMANCE PROJECT FROM LOUISE ORWIN & COMPANY, CURRENTLY IN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT.

CALL OUT: We are looking for 20 boys aged between 5 and 20 years old to participate at this exciting early stage of initial development.

What is BOYSBOYSBOYS?

BOYSBOYSBOYS is a new documentary-style contemporary performance work exploring boyhood, identity, and how a young man learns to be in the complicated world of today that we all live in.

This new project from acclaimed theatre-maker, writer and director Louise Orwin dives into the raw and urgent terrain of boyhood in the 21st century. Blending her signature documentary style with a bold, participant-led process, the piece will be built from interviews with boys aged between 5 and 20 years old, each speaking candidly about their experiences of growing up male in today’s world.

These authentic voices will form the heartbeat of the show, woven into a compelling theatrical text which will eventually be brought to life by a cast of young boys on stage. The work will explore the gap between vulnerability and violence, sensitivity and silence, and the unspoken pressure many boys feel to be hard, dominant, or “weaponised” in the world. What would it mean to live in a world where boys were invited to be soft and sweet, tender and emotional, and were praised for these things just as much as they’re potentially praised for being leaders, or rational thinkers, or strong and tough?

What will the final work look and feel like?

As a brand new project, the final form of the work is still emerging. It is likely to include a theatrical text written by Louise, inspired by the interviews undertaken during this research phase; and eventually performed by Louise alongside a cast of boys and young men in a contemporary performance setting.

Participation at this stage does not involve performance — only a one-to-one interview.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for 20 boys aged between 5 and 20 years old to take part in a 30–60 minute Zoom interview with Louise. Interviews will take place between the 2nd and 10th April.
