On Care: Working with autobiography and trauma safely as an artist
The workshop will last 3 hours with a break in between. Mostly it has a webinar format, but there will also be short written exercises for the participant to undertake.
As an artist who has been making risky work that deals with trauma, violence and autobiography for the past 8 years I have recently noticed an influx of makers, writers and theatre practitioners turning to similar material. ‘Self care’ and use of trigger warnings have been hot topics for the last few years, but where is the specific advice for makers and creatives who deal with their own and others’ trauma in their work? What are the potential risks to their mental health and those of their audiences? How do we deal with this sensitively and safely without watering down the nature of that work?
Responding to this recent influx of performance work dealing with trauma, autobiography and potentially triggering material, this workshop builds on skills and methodologies which I have garnered through years of creating such work in consultation with therapists, coaches and wellbeing practitioners. This workshop will help participants create skills and strategies around care and the creation of safe spaces when making risky devised and/or autobiographical work which deals with potential sensitive or triggering material.
This workshop is a digital workshop which happens intermittently via Zoom. It’s next outings will be in 2021.
